The next morning, Sid was knackered. The walk home after he’d left Ben had woken him up and once in bed he’d taken a while to get to sleep. It had seemed way too early when his alarm went at six, but Dana was picking him up at seven.

“Morning, Sid,” she said far too cheerily as he collapsed into the passenger seat clutching a thermos of much-needed coffee.

“Is it?” He sighed. “Yeah, okay. Morning, I guess.”

“Late night?” She put the car in gear and pulled away as he fastened his seat belt.

“Yeah.” Then he couldn’t resist adding, “Hot date.”

“All right for some. I got woken up in the night by my son because he’d wet the bed, and then my daughter was up and yelling at five. Your reason for sleep deprivation sounds more fun.” She chuckled ruefully.

“Yep. I’m not swapping.” Sid grinned, remembering Ben warm in bed with him last night.

Speaking of Ben, was it too early to text him? He checked the time on his phone and decided to wait till a little later.

He and Dana talked for a while about the project they were working on, and the sky outside gradually lightened with the dawn. It was clear today, and although it was going to be bloody cold on the beach, it would be a beautiful day to be by the sea.

By eight o’clock they were getting close to their destination, and Sid decided that it wasn’t too early to text Ben. Ben probably had to be up for lectures, and if not, well, he should have put his phone on silent.

Thanks again for last night. When can I see you at the weekend?

He briefly wondered if he was being too keen, but then decided that with Ben’s insecurities it was okay to keep the communication going.

Ben replied ten minutes later with What? No jokes for me today? And I’m free Friday if that works.

Yes, Friday’s good with me. I have no plans at all this weekend yet.

Same here, Ben sent back. But I didn’t want to admit to being a sad loser ;)

Sid chuckled. Savage.

Dana glanced sideways at him as she drove. “Are you texting your hot date?”

“Yeah. Trying to arrange to see him again this weekend.” Sid watched the message bubble, waiting for Ben’s next reply.

“Nice.” Dana didn’t bat an eyelid at the pronoun. They didn’t know each other outside work, and Sid had never officially come out to any of his colleagues.

Another message popped up from Ben.

Just kidding. I’m glad you’re a sad loser with no life, it makes dating you much easier if I don’t have to compete for your attention.

Yep, I’m all yours this weekend.

Ben sent back a cheesy-grin emoticon and Sounds like fun. Let’s start with Friday and see what happens.

Where do you want to meet? My place or yours? Or do you want to go out somewhere? Pub? Club? Cinema?

Pub would be okay with me. Probably not club. I’m happy to just hang out at home, or your place.

Okay, someone
